Deodorization Performance Test for Electrical Appliances

1. Overview

This test evaluates the ability of electrical appliances with deodorization functions to remove or reduce target odor-causing substances. A wide variety of odor compounds can be assessed, including ammonia (toilet odor), trimethylamine (food waste odor), and isovaleric acid (odor from sweaty socks and shoes).

2. Applicable Products

・Air purifiers
・Air conditioners
・Washing machines
・Steam cleaners
・Ion generators
・Ozone generators
・Sprayers (chemical mist generators)
・Stand-alone or adhesive-mounted chemical release products (e.g., chlorine dioxide products)
・Other products intended for deodorization

3. Standards and Regulations

・Japan Electrical Manufacturers’ Association (JEMA) Standard JEM 1467, Annex B: “Deodorization Performance Test”
・Other applicable methods as appropriate

4. Test Method

Example of a test method:

Odor-causing substances are applied to the target material, and their levels before and after treatment with the test specimen are compared to evaluate deodorization performance.

Odor-causing substances can be evaluated using either of the following methods at our center:

・Detector tube measurements

・Sensory evaluation conducted by human assessors (panelists)

Examples of evaluations:

Ozone generator: Odor-causing substances are dispersed into a test space, and their concentrations before and after operation of the ozone generator are compared using the detector tube method.

Washing machine: Odor-causing substances are applied to laundry items, and the odor intensity before and after washing is compared by sensory evaluation.

Steam cleaner: Odor-causing substances are applied to carpets, flooring materials, or similar surfaces, and the odor intensity before and after steam treatment is compared by sensory evaluation.
