Testing of Detergents and Soaps

1. Overview

Our center conducts various sanitizing efficacy tests for detergents and soaps in accordance with the methods established by the Fair Trade Commission of Household and Personal Care Products. Products that satisfy the applicable efficacy criteria may qualify for the Sanitizing Certification.

Although the standard methods specify designated bacteria and test materials, our center can modify the test microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, or viruses) and test materials (e.g., dishcloths or cutting boards) according to the intended application and client requirements.

4. Test Method

Method for Evaluating the Sanitizing Efficacy of Household Synthetic Detergents and Soaps

A household detergent is applied to a stainless steel disk inoculated with the test microorganisms and allowed to act for 5 minutes. After the specified contact time, the number of surviving microorganisms remaining on the disk is determined to evaluate product efficacy.

Method for Evaluating the Sanitizing Efficacy of Kitchen Synthetic Detergents and Soaps on Sponges

A kitchen detergent is applied to a sponge inoculated with the test microorganism and worked thoroughly into the sponge. After an 18-hour contact period, the number of surviving microorganisms remaining in the sponge is determined to evaluate product efficacy.

Method for Evaluating the Sanitizing Efficacy of Laundry Synthetic Detergents and Soaps

A test fabric inoculated with the test microorganism and dried is inserted into a spindle cloth (a cloth used to simulate laundry) and placed in a bottle containing the laundry detergent solution. The bottle is mounted on a washing machine simulation apparatus and operated for 10 minutes. After the specified treatment time, the number of surviving microorganisms remaining on the test fabric is determined to evaluate product efficacy.
