Virus Suppression Performance Test for Filter-Captured Viruses (Japan Electrical Manufacturers’ Association Standard JEM 1467, Annex F)

1. Overview

This test evaluates the virus suppression performance of antimicrobial-treated filters or built-in disinfection mechanisms (e.g., ultraviolet irradiation, ions, ozone, or disinfectants) against viruses captured on the filters of air purifiers and similar appliances.

Under the Japan Electrical Manufacturers’ Association (JEMA) Standard, the test is conducted using designated viruses. However, the test conditions can be customized at our center according to the client’s objectives and intended application. This includes substitution of the test microorganisms (e.g., bacteria or fungi) or replacement of the test target with allergens.

2. Applicable Products

・Air purifiers
・Air conditioners
・Antimicrobial or antiviral-treated filters for household appliances

3. Standards and Regulations

・Japan Electrical Manufacturers’ Association Standard JEM 1467, Annex F: “Performance Evaluation Test for the Suppression of Viruses Captured on Filters”

4. Test Method

Two test specimens are installed in advance in a 25 m³ test chamber, and virus aerosols are introduced into the chamber while the disinfection mechanism is deactivated. The test specimens are then operated so that airborne viruses are captured on the filters.

A portion of each filter is collected to determine the initial virus count. The test specimens are subsequently operated, and filter samples are collected at predetermined time intervals for measurement of the remaining viable viruses.

The virus suppression performance is evaluated by comparing an antimicrobial-treated filter with an untreated filter (control) or, in the case of devices equipped with a disinfection mechanism, by comparing operation with the disinfection mechanism activated and deactivated.

In addition to the method in which airborne viruses are captured on the filter, an alternative procedure may be used in which a virus suspension is directly inoculated onto excised filter material.

Filter configurations for the test specimens are as follows:

Test specimens without a disinfection mechanism:
Test specimen 1: antimicrobial-treated filter
Test specimen 2: untreated filter

Test specimens equipped with a disinfection mechanism:
Test specimen 1: untreated filter
Test specimen 2: untreated filter
