Performance Test for Vacuum Cleaners and Similar Appliances

1. Overview

This test evaluates the removal performance of vacuum cleaners and similar appliances against microorganisms (viruses, fungi, and bacteria) or allergens adhered to flooring materials. The operating conditions, such as the speed of movement of the vacuum cleaner head and the number of passes over the test surface, can be customized according to the client’s requirements.

2. Applicable Products

・Vacuum cleaners
・Wet vacuum cleaners
・Mops
・Steam irons
・Other cleaning devices

3. Standards and Regulations

 None

4. Test Method

Flooring materials are placed inside a test chamber (25 m³ or 1 m³), and a suspension containing the target microorganisms (viruses, fungi, and bacteria) or allergens (e.g., pollen or house dust mites) is sprayed into the chamber to allow deposition onto the flooring materials. Alternatively, the suspension may be applied directly to the flooring surface.

The contaminated flooring materials are then cleaned using the head of a vacuum cleaner or another cleaning device at a predetermined moving speed and for a specified number of passes. The removal performance of the test specimen against microorganisms or allergens on the flooring surface is evaluated by comparison with a control condition in which no cleaning is performed.

In addition, collection efficiency testing in accordance with Annex E of JIS C 9108 can also be conducted.
